SUM OF ONE

Sum of One is a roasting & design project by Beau Badinski.

ROASTING APPROACH

Add heat and don’t fuck it up. Thats the point of this whole thing. We roast quite light with the intetion of bringing out the flavors of the coffee and show off the characteristics of the origin, without adding any roastiness. The end goal: to roast coffees that are clean, bright and complex— Extreme elegance.

SOURCING

We purchase coffees from all over the world, essentially any origin we can get our hands on— if we love it on the cupping table, we will buy it no matter the origin.

We work with a small number of green coffee importers who work directly with coffee producers around the world. Most of these green importers are B-CORP certified.

COFFEE SELECTION

We purchase coffee entirely with flavor in mind. The coffee has to taste unique, and interesting to us. It has to have that thing— something that makes it pop and stand out.

We know the coffee will be roasted light, and has to shine that way. So we choose coffee that we know can take a light roast. From there we make sure the coffee when roasted has clearly defined flavors and is super clean and bright.

LOCATION

We roast out of a co-roasting space in Brunswick, in the city of Melbourne, Australia.

DESIGN

All design for sum of one is done in house as part of this as a complete creative project. I've been in bands for most of my life, so the the DIY spirit runs deep in sum of one. I am heavily influenced and inspired by music culture. I like shit that looks a little bit weird while still being functional and aesthetically pleasing.

SUM OF ONE PHILOSOPHY

S.O.1 is a process of analysing and roasting and tasting. Trying to do justice to the amazing coffees we purchase, and the producers who grew and processed them. Creating roasts that little bit better each time. Continuous, incremental improvement to achieve the best possible outcome.
